‘TOKYO TAILS’

This compelling series of paintings draws viewers into the neon-lit labyrinth of Tokyo's underworld, offering a cinematic experience rendered through Obegi’s masterful use of colour and form.
Obegi introduces us to a universe inhabited by anthropomorphic characters—cats known as the Osakats and their criminal canines archenemies—who navigate Tokyo's underworld's complex and dangerous landscape. These characters are integral to the narrative and add complexity and charm.

"Tokyo Tails" follows the story of Wizz, an Australian shepherd and former yakuza drawn back into the shadowy underworld by unforeseen circumstances. Each painting, meticulously crafted to resemble a screenshot from an imagined film, captures the raw intensity and intricate dynamics of loyalty and betrayal within the feline yakuza clandestine world. Obegi has created an entire universe with Japanese film noir undertones, where the gritty realities of Tokyo’s underbelly are brought to life through her vivid and detailed paintings.

The Osakats and their canine rivals bring a unique twist to the traditional yakuza story, blending the fantastical with the noir.
At its core, "Tokyo Tails" is a vibrant love letter to Japanese culture and reflects Obegi’s deep affection for manga, Japanese culinary delights, and the city's iconic neon lights.

"Tokyo Tails" pays homage to the pets we love, loved and lost, weaving in nostalgic melodies inspired by Mizubayashi. This emotional depth is balanced with a playful approach, inviting viewers to explore a spectrum of emotions and experiences.

In the spirit of the adage "a story is only as good as its villains," Obegi creates a cast of characters that are as compelling as the settings they inhabit. The tension between yakuza factions, represented by these anthropomorphic figures, is a powerful metaphor for internal and external conflicts, making "Tokyo Tails" a narrative tour de force.
