NAGORI

In Japan, the movements of time operate a form of fascination close to addiction. These large scaled paintings capture the loneliness and alienation of our way of life.

After spending two years in Kyoto, Japan, Obegi was profoundly moved by the contrast between its busy city scapes and its isolated figures. Upon moving to London, in 2020, a world wide lockdown froze the social landscape, exacerbating this solitude.

Influenced by Japanese woodblock prints and American New realism, Obegi’s practice explores the dissipating notion of human connection.

Nagori is the expression of nostalgia for the season that has just left us. A sort of melancholy which carries with it the happiness of lived moments and the tenderness of memory. Without sadness, and with the awareness that the seasons will return.
